The VoiceOI built-in dialer: lead lists, carriers, DNC list and limits

The built-in dialer is how VoiceOI places calls for accounts that do not use VICIdial®. You load a lead list, connect a carrier, pick a script, start your bots and press Start on a mission, and the dialer calls each lead once. It has real limits: no calling hours, no scheduling and no automatic retries. Read what it does not do before your first campaign.

Applies to:Built-in dialer accounts

Last checked against the product: . Found a mistake? Tell us.

Is the built-in dialer on my account?

Only if the VoiceOI team switched it on. It is not self-serve, and only the organization Admin sees the Dialer sidebar group (Realtime, Missions, Lead Lists, Carriers, Nodes, Bot Fleet, DNC, Filters, AMD Tuning). VICIdial accounts see Remote Agents instead. See Which setup do you have.

  1. Switch it on

    VoiceOI team

The team enables it, sets up the dialing server and creates your bots.

  2. Connect a carrier

    Both

You send your provider’s SIP details. See Carriers.

  3. Load a list and create a mission

    You
  4. Start the bots, then the mission

    You

Start the bots on Bot Fleet, then press Start on the mission and watch Realtime.

How does the dialer place a call?

About once a second, for every running mission, the dialer starts calls for pending leads, up to ready bots times the dial level and designed to stay within the Call Speed (CPS) cap. Asterisk is the phone software on your dialing server, which the Nodes page calls a node.

  1. It takes pending leads from the mission’s list, not necessarily in file order, for each ready bot (started, free, on your dialing server). With none, nothing dials.
  2. If the DNC list is active for your account, it skips and marks dnc_skipped any lead that matches exactly. Ask the team to confirm it is active.
  3. The call goes through the mission’s carrier with the dial prefix in front. A number of 11 digits starting with 1 loses that 1 first; if your carrier needs it, the team sets it in the Dialplan Entry.
  4. On answer, Asterisk listens first and ends the call if it is sure the answer is a machine. Otherwise a bot runs your script.
  5. When the bot finishes, the lead gets a result and is called again only if you recycle the list. An unanswered, busy, carrier-failed, machine or transferred call may record no result and leave the lead marked as dialing.

Pause stops new calls; calls already ringing or talking continue. A mission whose list has run out calls again once leads are added by an import or a recycle, so press Pause before you load more.

The mission form

A mission is the built-in dialer’s campaign. Dialer > Missions (titled Campaigns) is the dialer’s own screen, separate from the staff-only Campaigns page in the main menu. Choose New Campaign. A card has Start, Pause, Edit, Results (opens Call History, not filtered) and a trash button that deletes the mission, not its list. A new mission is paused.

Settings the dialer uses
SettingWhat it does
Outbound Carrier, Call Speed (CPS)The carrier that places the calls (see Carriers), and the most new calls started each second.
AI Agent ScriptThe bot campaign the team set up for your script. If it is missing, ask the team. See Script Builder.
Lead ListThe form shows names only, and every list is named New Lead List, so keep one list while you set up and, after Start, check the numbers in Call History against your file. If you cannot tell lists apart, ask the team first.
Dial PrefixDigits placed before every number. It replaces the carrier’s prefix, and an empty box does not remove that one.
Transfer SettingsWith Override Script on and a Dest Number, the mission forces its own Strategy (Bridge (Dialer) or Refer (SIP Trunk)) and prefixes. Edit always opens with it off: turn it on and re-enter the values before you save, or the forced transfer is cleared. See Transfers and closers.
Not applied: the form shows these, but the dialer does not use them. Do not rely on them.
SettingWhat actually happens
Max Drop Rate (%)Abandoned calls are not measured or limited.
DNC switchThe form always saves it as on, and it does not control whether the DNC list is used.
Max AttemptsA lead gets one call. See Recycle Leads.
AMD switchIt does not turn machine detection on or off.
Dial LevelThe “Nx” on the mission card shows this number, not the level in use (see Realtime). Keep it at 1.0 too.
Dialing Mode, Ring Time (Sec), Dial OrderAll dialing modes dial the same way, the ring time you type is not used (ask the team how long a call rings), and leads may not follow your file’s order.

What does the built-in dialer not do?

Limits of the built-in dialer
Not availableWhat that means for you
Calling hours, time zones and schedulingVoiceOI does not set or enforce hours, a mission has no start or stop time, and the State column is saved but no rule reads it. You run missions inside the hours that apply to the people you call. See Who sets calling hours.
Automatic retriesThere is no retry rule or delay, and no predictive pacing or abandoned-call limit. Recycle Leads queues only leads with a recorded result, so for the others ask the team.
Voicemail dropA call that reaches a machine ends. Bots leave no message.
Filters by state, area code or ZIPThe Filters page saves rules, but a mission has no setting to attach one, so do not rely on filters to keep any lead out. Remove the leads you must not call from your file before you import it.
National or state listsVoiceOI checks no national, state, litigator or reassigned-number lists.

How do I load a lead list?

Open Dialer > Lead Lists, create a list, choose Import Leads on its row, map your columns and press Start Import.

  1. Create the list

    You

Choose Create New List. Every list is named New Lead List and cannot be renamed, so tell them apart by the ID under the name and Date Created.

  2. Import and map

    You

Use a .csv, .txt or .tsv file up to 100 MB with column names in row 1. In the Import Leads Wizard, map Phone Number (required) and optionally Country/Area Code, First Name, Last Name and State.

  3. Check the count

    You

The wizard says Leads imported even when nothing was added. Lead Count and AVAILABLE are totals saved at import that rise again if you import twice, so ask the team to confirm how many leads are ready before you press Start.

What the import does with your columns
ColumnWhat is stored
Phone NumberDigits only. A row is skipped if it has no number, under 7 digits, or a number already in the list. Any other digits become a lead, so map the right column.
Country/Area CodePlaced before the number, and the DNC check uses the result. Map it only if Phone Number does not already start with the code.
First Name, Last Name, StateNames are joined into one name, or “Valued Lead”. The wizard says State is for timezone filtering, but it is only saved and nothing uses it.

Delete a list and its leads with Delete List in the three-dot menu. That can also delete a mission that uses it, so note the mission settings first.

What does Recycle Leads do?

In the three-dot menu, Recycle Leads puts leads that have a recorded result back in the queue, and a running mission calls them again. It skips leads on a call or still marked as dialing, which unanswered, busy, carrier-failed, machine and transferred calls can leave. If calls are missing, ask the team to check the list.

Where do I connect my carrier?

On Dialer > Carriers (titled Carrier Connections). You can use your own SIP carrier, such as a Twilio or Telnyx SIP trunk, if it meets the requirements on the Handbook tab below. Check your carrier’s rules for automated and AI-voice calling. VoiceOI also offers its own carrier service, sold separately from the bots. For the full steps, see Integrations and carriers.

The three tabs
TabWhat it holds
Live TrafficOpens first. See the warning below.
ManagementAdd Carrier takes Carrier Name, Registration String (blank for IP authentication), Account Entry (sip.conf) and Dialplan Entry. Each card has an Active or Disabled switch, Edit and delete.
HandbookWhat a carrier must support: SIP, G.711 u-law audio and RFC 2833 keypad tones.
  • The team writes the Dialplan Entry with you, so do not paste one from another system. The dial prefix is the text between _ and the first dot: _9. gives 9, but _X. gives a prefix that cannot be dialed, and calls fail.
  • Your carrier must accept calls from your dialing servers. Ask the team for the addresses.
  • Ask the team to confirm a saved carrier is live. To test, load a list holding only your own number, create a mission and press Start, then Pause after the call.
  • Use only caller ID numbers you own or are authorized to use. See Whose caller ID is shown.

What are Bot Fleet and Nodes for?

Bot Fleet (titled Bot Management) lists your bots, which the team creates for your plan. A bot handles one call at a time. You use Start, Stop, Start Selected and Stop Selected, and the team handles Add Bot, Bulk Create, Edit and the delete buttons. The grey Ready box shows on any bot not on a call, even a stopped one, so read the status beside it.

Nodes (titled Telephony Cluster) lists the dialing servers with Online or Offline, Active Calls, Bot Slots and the last Heartbeat. If a server shows Offline, tell the team. Use Sync Telemetry to refresh the cards, and leave Link Server and delete to the team, because deleting a server link stops all bots on that node.

How does the DNC list work on the built-in dialer?

Open Dialer > DNC (titled DNC (Do Not Call) List) to hold numbers for the built-in dialer to check. Ask the VoiceOI team to confirm the list is active for your account before you rely on it. Only the built-in dialer reads it, and calls that VICIdial places never do. See the DNC list page.

How to use it and what to expect
TopicWhat to know
Adding numbersIn Bulk Add Numbers, paste numbers or use Upload File (CSV/TXT), then press Add to DNC List. Only digits are kept and entries under 10 digits are ignored. Any other value of 10 or more digits is added too, so use phone numbers only.
Exact matchAn entry of 5551234567 does not block a lead stored as 15551234567. Include any Country/Area Code you mapped on import, and add both formats if your lists use both.
Timing, removal, activeA new number may not block at once, and DNC Blacklist synchronized successfully only means the save worked. The trash icon removes a row from the page, but the number can stay blocked. On a single-server installation the list may not block at all. Ask the team to confirm it is active, and whether a removed number can be called.
Fixed textApart from Blocked Numbers, the tiles and the two notes at the bottom are fixed text. Export List exports nothing, so keep your own copy.

How does the built-in dialer handle answering machines?

Asterisk listens to an answered call before the bot speaks, and ends it if it is sure the answer is a machine. Otherwise a bot gets it, and the script can still end it with an AM Detect step or a rule in the Machines (Voicemail/Beeps) category on Immediate Hangups, logged as AM. A rule in the DNC Keywords (Profanity/Abuse) category logs DNC. A machine that Asterisk ends first may not be logged as AM or appear in Call Logs, and its lead can stay marked as dialing. Detection is not perfect, so a person can be cut off. See What happens when a bot reaches voicemail.

Dialer > AMD Tuning (titled AMD Engine Tuning) holds account-wide sliders, mostly in milliseconds, such as Initial Silence and Total Analysis Time. The slider that counts words is not applied, and the two notes at the bottom are fixed text, so do not rely on the calibration advice or assume a change applies at once. Config Synced means the setting is saved on your account, so ask the team to confirm it is live. Change one slider at a time by a small step, and compare similar batches of calls.

What does the Realtime page show?

Dialer > Realtime (titled Live Monitoring, not Live Monitor): pick a running mission under Live Control: Select Campaign to set its Current Dial Level, the box that sets the pace. After a save it shows the mission form’s number again, not the level in use, and leaving the box saves whatever it shows, even if you typed nothing. Dial Level Adjusted is the only confirmation, so ask the team to confirm the level in use.

Where do I see the calls the dialer placed?

Call History has no sidebar link. Open it from a mission’s Results button. It opens on Transfers Only, which usually shows nothing, so choose All Call Logs.

  • Columns: Date & Time, Customer, Campaign, Status (the lead’s status, such as called, machine or failed), Duration, Recording and Result (the call’s code).
  • It shows only the newest 50 calls, with no paging, and search matches the number or name saved with the lead. For older calls, dates or an export, use Call Logs, where only an Admin login can export. Export CSV here does nothing.
  • Calls the built-in dialer places can have a recording: Listen plays it, otherwise the column reads No Audio, and nothing is purged automatically. Recording notices and consent stay with you. See Recording and monitoring.

When the built-in dialer does not behave

The mission is running but no calls go out

Likely cause

It needs pending leads, a started bot that is free on your dialing server, and an Active carrier.

How to check

Read Bots Ready on Realtime, then check Bot Fleet, Nodes, Carriers > Management and the mission’s Dial Prefix (digits only).

How to fix it

Load a new list, or recycle after you check your opt-outs. Press Start on Offline bots. If a server is Offline, tell the team.

Still stuck

The mission name, the time with time zone, and Bots Ready.

The wizard says “Leads imported” but the list is empty or short, or says “Import failed”

Likely cause

Nothing is added if no dialing server is online or the file cannot be read. A wrong file type, or a file over 100 MB, shows Import failed. If you mapped the wrong column, every value in it with 7 or more digits becomes a lead that a mission will call.

How to check

Read Lead Count on Lead Lists, and check Nodes shows an Online server.

How to fix it

With no server online, get one online with the team, then import again.

After a wrong column, pause any mission on the list and do not press Start. Note the mission settings, choose Delete List, create a new list, and import with Phone Number on the phone column. Then Edit the mission to choose it, or create it again if deleting the list removed it. A second import into the same list leaves the wrong leads. Ask the team to confirm the new list before Start.

Still stuck

The list ID under the list name, the file name, and the import time with time zone.

Calls go out faster or slower than the dial level I set

Likely cause

The mission form’s level is not the one the dialer uses. It uses 1.0 until a level is saved from Realtime, whose box can show the form’s number instead.

How to check

Watch Bots Ready and the bots showing TALKING on Realtime.

How to fix it

On Realtime, pick the mission, set Current Dial Level, and click outside until Dial Level Adjusted appears. Ask the team to confirm the level in use.

Still stuck

The mission name, the level you expect, and the time with time zone.

A number on my DNC list was still called

Likely cause

The match is exact (see the DNC list). The list may not be active, a new entry may not block yet, and VICIdial calls never read it.

How to check

Compare the lead’s digits in Call History with the DNC entry, including any country code.

How to fix it

Add every format you use. Ask the team to confirm the list is active, then test with your own number.

Still stuck

The number, the call time with time zone, the mission name and the lead ID.

Leads show as dnc_skipped, or a number I removed from the DNC list is still skipped

Likely cause

Removing a row does not unblock the number. A lead is also marked dnc_skipped on an exact match, and if the dialer cannot read the list at all it does this to every lead.

How to check

The number is gone from Active DNC Registry but is still not called, or a whole list stops.

How to fix it

Ask the team whether the number can be called and the list is being read, and do not recycle until they confirm.

Still stuck

The number as stored, the list ID under the list name, and the time with time zone.

Recycle Leads recycled 0 leads, or a lead was called again after I recycled

Likely cause

Leads still marked as dialing are not reset (see Recycle Leads).

Recycle checks no opt-outs, so do not rely on it to leave out a lead whose earlier result was DNC or that the DNC list skipped.

How to check

Read the count after you press Recycle Leads, and look in Call Logs for an earlier DNC result.

How to fix it

Ask the team to check the list on the dialing server. Do not recycle when you are unsure who opted out: load a fresh file without those numbers into a new list.

Still stuck

The list ID under the list name, the lead ID, and the times with time zone.

Call History is empty

Likely cause

The page opens on Transfers Only, which looks for TRANSFERRED, but transfers are stored as XFER.

How to check

The heading reads “Showing all transferred calls”.

How to fix it

Choose All Call Logs. For transfers only, filter Call Logs by XFER.

Still stuck

The mission name and the time of a call you expected, with time zone.

Many calls end within seconds and nobody talks to a bot

Likely cause

Asterisk ends a call when it is sure the answer is a machine, before the bot speaks. A carrier that rejects calls looks similar.

How to check

Compare the AM and DAIR counts on Dialer Dispositions (its own page in the main menu). Calls Asterisk ended as machines may not appear anywhere, so a gap between leads taken and calls logged points to them.

How to fix it

Tell the team, and adjust AMD Tuning as described above. If calls never reach a bot, ask the team to check the carrier.

Still stuck

Five example calls with times and time zone, the mission name and the carrier name.

Every call fails, or nothing dials, right after I add a carrier or a dial prefix

Likely cause

The dial prefix is read from the carrier’s Dialplan Entry, and a pattern that starts with X or N gives a prefix that cannot be dialed. On some setups a prefix that is not digits stops the mission from dialing at all.

How to check

Compare the mission’s Dial Prefix and the carrier’s Dialplan Entry.

How to fix it

Ask the team to correct the Dialplan Entry, and keep any mission Dial Prefix to digits.

Still stuck

The carrier name, the mission name, and the time of a failed call with time zone.

Common questions

Does the VoiceOI built-in dialer have calling hours or scheduling?

No. VoiceOI sets no calling hours and a mission has no start or stop time, so you run missions inside the hours that apply to the people you call. On VICIdial, hours come from its own Local Call Time setting.

Does the built-in dialer retry leads that did not answer?

No. Each lead is called once and Max Attempts is not applied. Recycle Leads queues only leads with a recorded result, and you should not rely on it to leave out a lead that opted out, so ask the team if calls are missing.

Does the built-in dialer leave a voicemail message?

No. A call that reaches a machine ends. Detection is not perfect, so a person can be cut off and a machine can reach a bot.

Does the built-in dialer DNC list apply to calls placed by VICIdial?

No. Only the built-in dialer reads it, the match is exact, and the list may not be active on your account. Ask the VoiceOI team to confirm it is active before you rely on it.

Which carriers work with the built-in dialer?

A SIP carrier that supports SIP, G.711 u-law audio and RFC 2833 keypad tones and accepts calls from your dialing servers, such as a Twilio or Telnyx SIP trunk. VoiceOI also offers its own carrier service, sold separately from the bots.

What do I need before I press Start on a mission?

A lead list with leads in it, a carrier the team has confirmed is live, started bots on an online dialing server, and a mission with a script chosen. Keep the Realtime dial level at 1.0.
