Outbound AI Voice Agent

Outbound AI Voice Agent.
What It Is and How AI Outbound Calling Works.

An outbound AI voice agent is software that places phone calls to a list of leads and holds the conversation itself instead of a human rep, following a script it branches through or, with generative bots, a freer conversation inside limits you set. It asks your questions, listens to the answers and either ends the call with a logged outcome or hands the live call to a person. VoiceOI builds outbound AI voice agents for call centers, BPOs and agencies that run fronter-to-closer campaigns over VICIdial or any SIP carrier.

What Is AI Calling?

AI calling means software, not a person, makes or takes the phone call and holds the conversation. It turns what the person says into text, decides what to say next, and answers in a synthetic or recorded voice.

Outbound AI calling is the version where the bot dials a lead list. It speaks first, asks the questions you wrote, branches on the answers, and either ends the call with a logged outcome or passes the live call to a human closer. Inbound AI calling, where a bot answers incoming calls as a receptionist or support line, is a different product, and VoiceOI does not do it.

Two kinds of bot do the talking: recorded-voice bots follow a branching script of voice lines you record or generate in advance, and AI agents hold a freer conversation inside limits you set. The sections below compare them with a prerecorded robocall. For how an AI dialer differs from predictive and power dialers, see types of call center dialers.

Outbound AI Voice Agent vs a Prerecorded Robocall

Both place calls from a list, but they differ in what happens once someone answers. A robocall plays one fixed message. Even a bot that speaks recorded audio branches on what the person says, so the call can go different ways.

MachinesMay play the message to the machine too.Answering-machine detection ends the call and logs it as AM.
Do-not-call requestsTypically a keypad option, if there is one.A spoken request not to be called ends the call and is logged as DNC.

A general comparison. If you are looking at keypad menus and broadcast messages, see outbound IVR software, or outbound AI IVR for how conversational bots compare with keypad menus. The TCPA consent rules for AI voices are covered in the consent section below.

How an AI Outbound Calling Campaign Runs

From a lead list to a logged outcome, with a human closer taking the calls that qualify.

  1. 1

    Load the leads

Upload a CSV lead list, or keep your lists in VICIdial. Filter by state, area code or ZIP code, then set timezone calling windows.

  2. 2

    Dial and detect machines

Bots dial through VICIdial or a SIP carrier. Answering-machine detection ends the call on a voicemail greeting, logged as AM.

  3. 3

    Hold the conversation

After your optional AI-voice disclosure, the agent asks your questions and branches on each answer. A spoken do-not-call request ends the call.

  4. 4

    Transfer or log the outcome

Qualified leads are transferred over SIP to a closer chosen by your routing rules. Every other call is logged with a recording and a transcript.

  5. 5

Retry the leads that did not connect

Set retries so unanswered leads are tried again under your campaign rules, inside the calling windows you chose.

  6. 6

    Review and improve

Read transcripts and listen to recordings, adjust the script in the builder, and test the change in the simulator before the next run.

Two Types of Outbound AI Voice Agent: Scripted or Generative

Pick the bot by what you want to happen at the end of the call.

Outbound AI voice agent types: fronter, closer and generative AI bots
Bot typeHow it worksLive transferFrom (list price, per bot per month)
AI fronter botFollows a short branching script, qualifies the lead, then hands over the call.Yes, to your closers over SIP.$25
Closer botRuns a longer script with up to 12 questions on Standard, or an extended flow with complex branching on Ultimate.Yes.$100
Generative AI (LG) botAn LLM agent that holds a freer conversation inside the limits and question flow you set.No. The Pro tiers can write each call to a Google Sheet.$50

Question limits and features differ by tier; closer notes come with the Good Fronter tiers. See the VoiceOI pricing page for every tier.

When to Use Each Type of AI Outbound Calling Bot

A fronter bot suits screening: a few fixed questions, a clear pass or fail, and a live transfer to your closers. It is the first-contact role in a fronter-to-closer campaign.

Use a generative AI bot when the conversation has to flex. LG bots do not live-transfer. Pro LG tiers can append each call's captured answers to a Google Sheet, so your team can follow up. For longer scripts with deeper branching, a closer bot fits. You build and test every flow in the no-code AI voice agent builder before it calls real leads.

What an Outbound AI Voice Agent Handles on Every Call

Controls that run inside every campaign to keep machines and do-not-call requests away from your closers.

Answering-machine detection

A detected machine ends the call and is logged as AM. The machine phrase lists are editable per organization.

Do-not-call handling

A spoken do-not-call request ends the call and is logged as DNC.

Optional AI-voice disclosure

Optionally play an AI-voice disclosure at the start of the call.

Transfer with notes

A qualified call is handed to a human closer over SIP, with AI-written notes on the Good Fronter tiers.

Recordings and transcripts

Every call has both, so you can review what the agent said and fix the script.

About a second per turn

The agent replies in about a second per turn in testing, so the call feels like a conversation.

AI Outbound Calling Outcomes Logged for Each Call

Every call ends in a logged outcome, with a recording and a transcript behind it. These are the main ones.

Main outcomes of an AI outbound call and what happens next
OutcomeWhat happenedWhat happens next
Transferred (XFER)The person qualified, and the live call went to a closer. The closer takes the call, with AI-written notes on the Good Fronter tiers.
Answering machine (AM)Detection heard a machine, so the call ended. No message is left, and the bot moves to the next lead.
Do not call (DNC)The person asked not to be called. The call ends and is logged as DNC.
Other outcomes, for example not qualified or callbackThe call ended without a transfer. It is logged as a disposition, and the recording and transcript are kept.

Outcome names and codes depend on your script and dialer settings.

Outbound AI Voice Agent Use Cases by Industry

Outbound campaigns where the first call is a screening call and a person takes it from there.

The pattern is the same across industries: the agent calls leads who agreed to be contacted, asks your qualifying questions, and passes the people who qualify to a human. These pages show it for specific lead types.

Outbound AI Voice Agent Cost: Per Bot, Not Per Minute

VoiceOI bills per bot, prepaid monthly, with no per-minute AI fee. List prices run $25 to $155 per bot per month by bot type and connection, and volume discounts reach 60% at 250 bots or more, with a price floor for each tier. Each bot makes one call at a time, so cost scales with how many calls you want running at once.

To see how this compares with platforms that bill each minute, read AI voice agent pricing compared, or estimate your own number with AI calling cost per minute. If you are weighing VoiceOI against another tool, the VoiceOI vs Synthflow comparison is a good place to start.

Fronter-to-Closer Flow With an Outbound AI Voice Agent

In a fronter-to-closer campaign the agent is the first-contact caller. It dials the list, ends the call when answering machine detection hears a machine, asks the screening questions, and hands each qualified person to a human closer by AI live transfer. Your closers then spend their time on people who have already answered your questions.

The same flow works for telemarketing and collections teams, where a person takes over once the call qualifies. For the sales-floor view, see AI calling software for sales and AI telemarketing software; for the dialer side, see AI auto dialer for call centers.

What VoiceOI Does Not Do

  • Take inbound calls or act as a receptionist: it is outbound only.
  • Leave voicemails: when a machine answers, the call ends.
  • Sync to a CRM yet (CRM integrations are coming soon), or offer a public API.
  • Book calendar slots, send texts or take payments.
  • Live-transfer from generative AI (LG) bots: transfers come with fronter and closer bots.
  • Hold conversations in languages other than English: calls are English-first.

Outbound AI Voice Agent FAQs

Answers on voicemail, dialers and carriers, languages and the law.

What is an AI outbound caller, and is it the same as an outbound voice bot?

Yes, they describe the same thing: software that dials a lead list, speaks first, asks the questions you wrote, listens to the answers and either logs an outcome or hands the live call to a human closer. "Outbound voice bot", "outbound AI voice agent" and "AI outbound caller" are different names for it. VoiceOI builds two kinds: recorded-voice bots that follow a branching script, and AI agents that hold a freer conversation inside limits you set.

Can an outbound AI voice agent leave a voicemail?

Not with VoiceOI. When answering-machine detection hears a voicemail greeting or other machine, the call ends and is logged as AM (voicemail). The agent does not leave a message, and there is no ringless voicemail. It moves on to the next lead, so fewer machines reach your closers.

Which dialers and carriers does it work with?

Bots can run as VICIdial remote agents, with outcomes written back to VICIdial as dispositions. They can also dial through the built-in dialer over any SIP carrier, including Twilio and Telnyx SIP trunks, and Asterisk or FreePBX setups over SIP. You add a carrier by pasting its sip.conf or pjsip.conf block into the Carrier Manager.

What languages does an outbound AI voice agent support?

English. Conversations are English-first, because the speech recognition is built for English. VoiceOI does not support multilingual conversations today.

Is AI outbound calling legal?

It can be, with the right consent. AI-generated voices count as artificial voices under the TCPA, so telemarketing calls made with them need prior express written consent from the person called. Compliance is the customer's responsibility. The consent section above covers what to check in your script and disclosure. This is not legal advice.

Does it take inbound calls?

No. VoiceOI is built for outbound campaigns. It does not answer inbound calls or act as a receptionist.

How many calls can it make at once?

One call per bot at a time, so the number of bots you run is the number of simultaneous calls. Your carrier or SIP trunk must also have enough channels to carry them.

How fast does the agent respond on a call?

About a second per turn in testing. That is a test figure, not a guarantee, and it will vary with your carrier and network.
