AI Fronter vs Human Fronter on an Outbound Floor

AI Fronter or Human Fronter? Which one is worth it?
An AI fronter vs human fronter comparison comes down to one question: who should handle the first, mostly unsuccessful part of an outbound call so that closers only talk to qualified people? This guide defines the fronter role, compares a human seat with an AI fronter bot, and shows what changes and what does not.
What is a fronter in a call center?
A fronter is the first-contact caller on an outbound floor. They dial, get through to a person, run a short screen, and if the lead qualifies they pass the call to a closer, the salesperson who finishes the sale. The model is common in final expense, solar, home services and other lead-driven sales. An AI fronter does the same job with a bot instead of a person.
Every floor has the same seat that nobody wants. The fronter dials, gets a machine, dials, gets a wrong number, dials, gets "not interested" before the second sentence. Out of a full shift, only a small slice is a real conversation with someone who might buy, and you pay for the whole shift.
What a human fronter seat costs
Use your own payroll for this number, because pay varies widely by country, shift and contract, and we do not publish an unsourced average. Add to the monthly wage the recruiting, training, the manager watching the seat, sick days and the weeks a new hire needs to become useful.
The issues are not only cost:
- Turnover. Fronting is a hard seat, and every replacement needs training.
- Inconsistency. The pitch on Friday afternoon is not the pitch on Monday morning.
- One call at a time. Doubling the dials means doubling the people.
- Going off script. Rarely on purpose, but it is a compliance risk every time.
What an AI fronter bot costs
VoiceOI prices bots per bot per month, not per minute. A bot is one concurrent call. Fronter bots start at $25 list, with a range by tier:
| Fronter tier | List price per bot per month | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| VICIdial Simple Fronter | $25 | Basic filtering, up to 3 questions, live transfers |
| VICIdial Good Fronter | $35 | Verifies age and ZIP, up to 5 questions, closer comments, live transfers |
| SIP Simple Fronter | $45 | Basic filtering, up to 3 questions, live transfers |
| SIP Good Fronter | $55 | Verifies age and ZIP, up to 5 questions, closer comments, live transfers |
Volume discounts of up to 60% apply at 250 or more bots, never below each tier's floor. Your carrier bills call minutes separately. The two seats are not the same thing, so compare them honestly: a human can improvise and a bot follows the rules you gave it, and the bot is English-first. See pricing for current figures.
AI fronter vs human fronter, side by side
| Human fronter | AI fronter bot | |
|---|---|---|
| Calls at once | One per person | One per bot; add bots for more |
| Consistency | Varies by person and hour | Follows the script every call |
| Answering machines | Hears them, hangs up | Detects them and ends the call |
| Do-not-call requests | Depends on the person | Phrase handling ends the call and logs it |
| Handles surprises | Strong | Within the limits you set |
| Languages | Whatever the person speaks | English-first |
| Cost shape | Salary, training, management | Per bot per month, plus carrier minutes |
| Handoff to a closer | Verbal | Live transfer over SIP, with AI-written notes on the Good Fronter tiers (Simple Fronter tiers transfer without closer comments) |
What an AI fronter does on a call
- It dials through your dialer, or through VoiceOI's built-in one.
- It detects answering machines and ends those calls.
- It opens with an opening you wrote.
- It asks your qualifying questions and handles the objections you scripted, such as "how did you get my number?" and "call me later". Where you want it, the optional AI-voice disclosure can be turned on.
- It ends the call with a logged disposition, such as a transfer, a do-not-call request or an answering machine.
- When someone qualifies, the live call is handed to a human closer over SIP. On the Good Fronter tiers the closer also gets AI-written notes about what was established; the Simple Fronter tiers transfer without closer comments.
The bot does not stay on the line to introduce the caller. It passes the call (and the notes, on the Good Fronter tiers). See AI live transfer.
What stays human
An AI fronter does not replace your closers. On a sales campaign a person still does the selling. The calling is replaced; the closing is not. A closer's day changes: instead of dialing and being hung up on, they take one screened caller after another.
VoiceOI places outbound calls only. It is not an AI front desk or receptionist, it does not take inbound calls, and it does not book calendars or send texts.
Two ways to build the bot
- Recorded-voice bot. Recordings, or lines generated in a voice you pick, arranged in a branching script. Every call follows your path. Best when the conversation is predictable.
- AI agent. You describe who it is, how it opens, what makes someone worth passing on, what it should know and what it must never say. It answers in its own words inside those limits. Best when people talk back.
Either one can be tested in a simulator before it dials a real lead.
Compliance still applies
A bot does not change who is responsible. The FCC's February 2024 ruling treats AI voices as artificial voices under the TCPA, which generally means prior express written consent for telemarketing, and you remain responsible for compliance. This is not legal advice. See TCPA controls for the controls VoiceOI provides.
How to tell if the pilot is working
Skip vanity metrics. Three numbers decide it:
- Conversations per hour. A bot works every minute it is switched on. Compare that with your fronters' real talk time, not their scheduled hours.
- Qualified transfers your closers accept. If closers keep saying "this person was never qualified", fix the questions before adding bots.
- Closer time spent selling. When only screened people reach closers, the same team sells more of its day.
Use recordings and transcripts to find where calls drop off, change the opening or the order of questions, and test again.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI replace fronters? For the first-contact screen on outbound campaigns, yes, a bot can do that job. Closers stay human.
How does the handoff to closers work? The live call is passed to a closer over SIP; routing rules choose the closer. AI-written notes go with it on the Good Fronter tiers; the Simple Fronter tiers transfer without closer comments.
What does an AI fronter cost? From $25 per bot per month at list price, before volume discounts, plus carrier minutes.
Does it answer inbound calls? No. It is an outbound fronter.
A sensible first step
Pick one campaign where fronters spend most of their day on machines and quick refusals. Run a handful of bots beside your human fronters for a couple of weeks and compare the three numbers above. Let the results decide how far to go.
